by Trice Sheridan
The Mass UFO Show held October 12, 2007, at the Hibernian Hall in Watertown, Massachusetts, provided an informative evening in a cordial setting. John Horrigan served as the event producer of the program, which was affiliated with Massachusetts MUFON. At the Mass UFO conference, several themes were presented, including those on unidentified submersible objects (USOs), black triangle sightings in Nova Scotia, and the latest crop circle developments. The event featured speakers: Don Ledger and Chris Styles (co-authors of the book, Dark Object on the Shag Harbour incident); Nancy Talbott, crop circle expert; Carl Feindt, water UFO researcher; and Matt Moniz, a chemist and ufo and paranormal researcher. Tim Binnall of the Binnall of America program attended. (The website of Tim Binnall’s very interesting program can be found at www.binnallofamerica.com.
The evening began with the welcoming remarks of John Horrigan, the Mass UFO Show event organizer. Next Greg Berghorn, Mass. MUFON State Director, described his organization’s goals and research activities. Greg’s informative summary is reflected in the detailed MUFON website, found at (http://www.massmufon.com/).
Nancy Talbott, president of BLT Research Research Team, Inc. (http://www.bltresearch.com) gave the first lecture, presenting the results of more than 10 years of scientific research examining crop circle plants and soils, as well as more recent crop circle developments. Ms. Talbott noted that BLT’s field-sampling efforts have included crop formations in multiple countries, involving several hundred fieldworkers. Originally BLT included John Burke, a NY businessman (with an avocational background in EM theory), Michigan biophysicist W.C. Levengood (with an M.S. degree in biophysics from the University of Michigan), and Nancy Talbott, who recruited, trained and directed the fieldwork, as well as editing the research reports and co-authoring (with WCL) a research paper published in 1999. In 2002, following 10 years of work with Levengood—and the publication of 3 research papers in peer-reviewed scientific journals--BLT Inc. began working with several new scientists, particularly professionals with expertise in geology, mineralogy, analytical chemistry and x-ray diffraction.
One of the major (visible) physical abnormalities seen in crop circle plants is apical node elongation—a statistically significant stretching or elongation of the first stem node beneath the seed-head. This node lengthening is frequently found in conjunction with another nodal abnormality—holes blown out at the nodes lower down the plant stem. These holes (called expulsion cavities) and the apical node elongation are both thought to be caused by exposure of the plants to very brief, very intense bursts of microwave radiation which instantly turn the plants' internal moisture to steam. As the steam expands the plant tissue, the more elastic fibers at the top of the plant stretch to allow the steam to escape. Farther down the plant stem, where the fibers are too rigid to expand, holes are blown out as the pressure increases.
Ms. Talbott also pointed out that, in some crop circles, node-length changes have been found to coincide with a mathematical principle well-known in physics, the Beer-Lambert Principle—which describes the precise manner in which EM energies are absorbed by matter. Incremental node-length changes in crop circle plants have been found to match, exactly, the degree of effect predicted by the Beer-Lambert Principle, thus clearly indicating that EM energies are the causative agency in the node-length change. This finding also rules out conclusively the possibility that mechanical flattening (flattening of the plants by boards or planks) could be the cause.
In some crop circles examined this incremental node-length change has clearly indicated that the source of the EM energy is directly over the center of the circle, corroborating one eye-witness account of a glowing light-ball observed over a field immediately prior to the appearance of a new circle.
Most interestingly, increase in node-length has also been documented in standing crop inside various complex crop formations—plants which were never flattened at all, but were exposed to the energy system because they were inside the overall perimeter of the energy effect. Obviously, the "pranks with planks" theory of crop formation cannot account for these changes.
In addition to the visible changes found in crop circle plants, comparative germination studies carried out in the laboratory--using seeds taken from crop circle plants and from control plants at a distance away from the crop formation—clearly show severe alterations in normal germination. When crop circles form in young, immature plants (before the seed is fully formed), the seeds do not develop normally, resulting in a significant reduction of reproductive capability. The affected plants are essentially sterilized.
However, when crop circles form in mature plants—where the seed is fully developed at the time of the event—these seeds (although stunted and weighing less than their controls) grow at up to 5 times the rate of normal and produce greater yield. And they do this without water or sunlight for unusually long periods of time. This amazing alteration in germination and growth capability was discovered to be due to exposure of the plants to very unusual electrical pulses. In the laboratory Levengood and Burke were able to replicate this effect by exposing normal (non-cropcircle) seeds to what they have called "ion avalanches," thus delineating another of the energies clearly involved in the crop circle phenomenon: unusual electrical pulses.
An hypothesis to explain crop circle formation, based on this work, suggests an unknown type of atmospheric plasma system as the causative agency. Many atmospheric plasmas spiral as they descend toward earth (the aurora borealis is one example) and it is known that spiraling plasmas emit microwaves and are associated with unusual electrical pulses. They are also known to be associated with strong magnetic fields, and the discovery by the BLT Team of tiny (10-50 micron diam.) magnetic particles in crop circle soils provides evidence of the presence at crop circle sites of such strong magnetic fields.
To read the published scientific papers, or for more information generally on the plant and soil research, see the BLT website at: http://www.bltresearch.com.
Ms. Talbott pointed out that the "atmospheric plasma" theory is the only scientific hypothesis offered for crop circle causation to-date, and emphasized that it is based upon extensive, published research. Whether this idea will be proven to be the final answer, however, is not clear. Increasingly well-documented anecdotal evidence seems to suggest the involvement of consciousness—human or perhaps otherwise—in the crop circle phenomenon.
Ongoing work with a young man in Holland who has for years been able to accurately predict when and where local crop circles would occur raises many profound questions. Ms. Talbott provided some details of an amazing array of unusual phenomena surrounding Robbert van den Broeke, among them the fact that he has witnessed the appearance of dozens of crop formations--which have exhibited both the regularly documented plant/soil changes and also a wide variety of concurrent light phenomena.
Many other so-called "paranormal" events regularly occur in Robbert's home and immediate environment, including "poltergeist" phenomena, encounters with UFOs, the appearance of "entities" on film and digital cameras, and the development of Robbert's "psychic" abilities. In addition to observing first-hand and documenting a variety of currently inexplicable events in Robbert's company, Ms. Talbott has also witnessed two crop formations occur—in 2001 and in 2006 (see: http://www.bltresearch.com/eyewitness1.html and http://www.bltresearch.com/eyewitness4.html ).
These events (and many others which Ms. Talbott did not have time to describe in detail) often involve elements which suggest purpose, rather than randomness—and purpose is generally recognized to be a function of consciousness. Because many of the elements which suggest this "purpose" do not appear to be directly related to, or produced by, Robbert (or other witnesses) himself, the question of some other source of consciousness is raised.
In addition, other reliable eyewitness accounts of crop circles forming in several countries increasingly involve the presence of UFOs and/or strange creatures (see: http://www.bltresearch.com/eyewitness.html), reports which also regularly include the witnesses' perception of an "external," purposeful consciousness present and influencing the event.
Over the years Ms. Talbott's participation in both the scientific research and her personal experience in the field have led her to suspect that, although completely natural forces (i.e., a plasma vortex) may be the physical agency responsible for the occurrence of crop circles, there is quite likely another—as yet unrecognized—component to the mystery, one involving consciousness. She further stated her growing impression that many so-called "paranormal" events are not in fact totally separate situations, but may all be components of one arena of "reality"—an arena still largely unrecognized and unknown to modern science.
Don Ledger, Canadian ufologist, MUFON researcher, pilot and author (www.donledger.com) spoke on black triangle sightings in the Nova Scotia area. Don co-authored, with Chris Styles, the book,Dark Object (on the Shag Harbor incident) [http://www.donledger.com/darkobject.html]. Don Ledger is the sole author of such other intriguing books as Maritime UFO Files (http://www.donledger.com/maritime.html and Swiss Air Down http://www.donledger.com/swissair.html). During Friday’s presentation, Don Ledger noted that, with the black triangle sightings, there frequently are temporary auditory problem in individuals witnessing the event. Don described witness observations of black triangles. One detailed event occurred over Cow Bay, Nova Scotia, in August 2002, of a massive black triangle. Evidence of an unknown object had appeared on a traffic control tape corresponding to both the reported time of the event and its distance from the ground at an altitude of approximately 1,800 feet. Don Ledger, a pilot of many years, also has worked as a director for the legislative (television) broadcasting association of Canada. Don Ledger emphasized that all craft flying the skies must have a clearance – which discounts the claim that all unidentified craft must be advanced/experimental military vehicles.
Next Matt Moniz, a chemist, investigative journalist, and UFO and paranormal researcher, summarized his impressions of the Roswell 60th anniversary event of this past July. Matt was reporting live from the Mass UFO Show for Spooky Southcoast, a Bay State fortean program, with website and archives found at www.spookysouthcoast.com.
Thereafter, Carl Feindt, U.S. Air Force veteran, ufologist, and MUFON field investigator, spoke on water UFOs (UFOs seen on the oceans and USOs – unidentified submersible objects). His talk cited observations by the military, including visual, ship radar and sonar sightings. Please refer to Carl’s sight for listing of global observations events at www.waterufo.net.
Carl Feindt’s information as to historical and contemporary water UFO sightings was enhanced by his research of the physical phenomena observed in conjunction with water UFOs. Observations included the appearance of water spouts resulting from water being suctioned, in a vacuum, from the Water UFO. Carl attributes this phenomenon to a byproduct of the water UFO’s field. Carl Feindt’s website at www.waterufo.net includes his detailed explanations of the physical phenomena associated with water UFOs. Carl’s research shows that the column (whether water, fog, mist, or haze) results from rotation of a field found in a vertical plane surrounding the Water UFO. A detailed analysis of this phenomenon can be found in Carl Feindt’s paper – the Physical Influences of a UFO on Water, found at http://www.waterufo.net/PIufoW.php. Other markers of water UFO flights, included evidence of UFO interaction with ice. For example, a clear hole on ice can be observed after a USO observation, or if the craft enters horizontally, there can be a crunched ice effect. Carl made reference to an example of a water spout generated by a Water UFO. This example appears in a photo of a UFO with water spout taken by Ed Walters in Florida. The dynamics of the UFO over the water spout, as captured in this photo, were the subject of scientific analysis by physicist, Dr. Bruce Maccabee (reference -- “Water Spout UFO Photographed, " by Dr. Bruce Maccabee, published in the MUFON UFO Journal, #319, November 1994). Carl Feindt’s numerous case studies and extensive research of all aspects of water UFOs is reflected on his website’s menu page at http://www.waterufo.net/menu.htm.
Chris Styles, author, ufologist, MUFON field researcher, spoke on the events of the October 4th 1967 Shag Harbour incident, one of the most thoroughly researched cases in this field. Chris noted that the night of the Shag Harbour event received the name “The Night of the UFOs” due to several sightings in the Eastern Canadian region. Chris emphasized the serious nature of the Shag Harbour impact, including the numerous calls of citizens to authorities (Royal Canadian Mounted Police) as to the possibility of an airplane crash. The Royal Canadian Mounted Police responded to the several telephone calls from the citizenry. Observers at the scene observed the craft floating on and then submerging into the water, leaving a large wake of yellowish foam. The Mass UFO program organizers have made reference to an excellent article found at the UFO evidence sight – Something Fell from the Sky – Shag Harbor, Nova Scotia at http://www.ufoevidence.org/Cases/CaseSubarticle.asp?ID=170 . Contemporary Canadian newspapers of the period discussed the importance of the recovery efforts concerning the unidentified object. Among these newspapers, the Halifax Chronicle Herald noted in the headline of its October 7th issue: “Could Be Something Concrete in Shag Harbor UFO – RCAF.” This article also mentioned that an underwater search was being conducted.
After the Shag Harbour event, the Canada Air Desk did undertake a field investigation. Chris noted that government documents confirmed the seriousness of the search. Concerning Canada’s interest in UFO subject matter, Chris mentioned the vital role of an astronomer, Jesuit priest and UFO investigator - Father Michael Burke-Gaffney. The collected reports of Father Gaffney (of Halifax’s Saint Mary’s University) furnished key UFO report material. Further, Chris discussed a government X-file type memo as well as information found: at the National Archives of Canada; from the organization APRO (Aerial Phenomena Research Organization); and other sources.
At the end of the presentation, Chris Styles mentioned the aspect of the continuation of the Shag Harbour recovery efforts. This additional information included reports of movements of an underwater craft to a location near Government Point, in the proximity of CFS Shelburne. Also, one geophysical report has shown the possibility of deep impressions in the “rip” at Shag Harbour. These anomalies could prove physical evidence of the unknown object. Chris also suggests as an excellent presentation/video on the Shag Harbour incident: UFO Files - Canada's Roswell (http://www.history.ca/ontv/titledetails.aspx?titleid=104710). The details of the Shag Harbour event and the account of Chris’s research efforts provided a very interesting presentation during an excellent evening. (http://www.ufoshow.org/mufo.html).
