"Two Strange Lights":

The Second UFO Sighting in North America

copyright 2007 John Horrigan

I have been researching historical weather and astronomical accounts in Olde New England for 5 years and paranormal phenomena for the past 18 years. In the course of this research, I have uncovered what I believe to be an account of the second UFO sighting in North America.

The sighting was originally reported in a book by Charles W. Elliott, The New England History, From the Discovery Of The Continent By The Northmen, A.D. 986 To The Period When Colonies Declared Their Independence, A.D. 1776, Volume II. It was published in New York in 1857.

     The Entry reads:

"Two stramge lights, like moons, rise and meet over Noddle's Island - they shoot out flames and sparkles - and a voice is heard in the water crying out in a dreadful manner 'boy, boy - come away - come away!' - it is heard by divers godly persons."

Granted, this could mean a number of things, from a rare double-bolide to St. Elmo's Fire to planets rising. The troublesome aspect is that someone yelling at a boy to "come away", as if danger was imminent. One must review some colonial accounts with a grain of salt as these settlers were great diarists but had difficulty discerning New England Weather and Climate during the first few generations of colonization. The interpretation lies solely with you, the contemporary reader.
